Cosmetic tattoos
The preparation and aftercare treatment of cosmetic tattoos is imperative to a desirable final result.
Frequently asked questions
Q: What’s the difference between microblading, feathering, powder brows, ombre and nano strokes?
A: Microblading, feathering and nano strokes are strokes that drawn to mimic individual hairs. Pigment is implanted into the epidermis and fades faster because it is closer to the surface of the skin. Nano strokes are the finest width, usually 0.18mm and typically drawn using a machine.
Powder brows and ombre are shading techniques.
All of these can be done manually or using a machine. Manual brows insert pigment using a row of fine needles to create a shallow scratch to the skin’s surface, which is why a manual technique can fade faster. Machine brows insert pigment slightly deeper into the skin using a needle cartridge that moves in an up and downwards motion, increasing the life span of your cosmetic tattoo.
Q: What techniques do you use? Which technique will suit me?
A: A suitable technique will be recommended based on your skin and desired results. Microblading or manual techniques aren’t suitable for fragile or oily skin. Machine brows are suitable for all skin types.
Q: Can you go over my old tattoo?
A: Faded tattoos can be covered and colour-corrected after a minimum of six weeks. If your existing tattoo is too saturated, it will absorb any new ink and removal will be required. The number of sessions required for either colour-correction or removal will depend on the existing tattoo.
Q: Can everyone have cosmetic tattoos?
A: If you have a bleeding disorder (haemophilia) or auto-immune disease, cosmetic tattoos generally won’t heal well and aren’t recommended. Henna brows is the recommended alternative. Cosmetic tattoos also cannot be done on pregnant or breastfeeding women. Fillers take 14 days to settle before a cosmetic tattoo should be done.
Q: How long does an appointment take?
A: Cosmetic tattoo appointments are scheduled for 2 hours and can take up to 3 hours depending on the type of tattoo you’d like done. This includes consultation, mapping and numbing. The cosmetic tattoo itself takes approximately 1-2 hours.
Q: How long will it last?
A: Microblading lasts approximately 12-18 months. Machine brows last longer because the pigment is inserted deeper and can last between 2-4 years. Touch ups are recommended 12-18 months apart to keep the colour looking fresh.
Q: Why do I need to arrange my own numbing gel and how do I order it?
A: Numbing gel is applied throughout cosmetic tattoos to ensure your maximum comfort. Under the Controlled Substance Act 1984, local anaesthetic for cosmetic tattoos in Australia must be supplied by a compounding pharmacist. This applies nationally and each state provides further guidance, such as SA Health.
Eyes n’ Shine Beauty has partnered with local compounding pharmacist, Jeff Ramsey Compounding Pharmacy in North Adelaide. Once you’ve booked your appointment, arrange your numbing gel by following the steps below:
- Call Jeff Ramsey Compounding Pharmacy on 8267 5457
- Request a $15 numbing gel for a cosmetic tattoo by Jennifer from Eyes n’ Shine Beauty
- Collect your numbing gel prior to your appointment
Simply bring your numbing gel with you on the day of your appointment. The numbing gel must be prescribed to the client.
Q: What is the downtime?
A: You’ll be able to resume your usual routine straight after your appointment. Your tattoo will be darker than their final result for approximately a week and you may feel tender for up to two days after your appointment, but there’s no need to take time off unless that is your preference. Some swelling is expected for eyeliner.
Q: How is a colour and shape chosen?
A: A brow shape is recommended to suit your brows using a measured mapping method and preferences to suit your lifestyle. Colour is selected to match your natural colour. Eyeliner colours are natural only, with varying options available from light to mid brown, charcoal and black. A custom lip colour is mixed for you based on your lip colour and preferences.
Q: What products do you use?
A: Softap mineral pigments for brows and lips, Will Anthony pigments (Li Pigments Signature Series) for eyeliner and Li-FT for saline removal.

Lash lift
Lash lifts are the easiest lash enhancements to maintain. Follow the guidance for preparation and aftercare for the best results.
Frequently asked questions
Q: What is a lash lift?
A: A lash lift results in curled lashes that hold for 6-8 weeks and don’t require any maintenance. It opens up the eyes and looks best with a tint or semi-permanent mascara.
Lash lifts include an protein treatment to restore lash health, regenerate and strengthen lashes.
- Curls and defines each lash for 6-8 weeks
- No maintenance required
- Vegan friendly
Q: Do the lashes lose their curl or grow out at an angle?
A: A lash lift doesn’t lose its curl, which is why sometimes lashes can grow out at an angle. Lifted lashes will fall as part of the natural lash life cycle, which lasts between 60 – 90 days. To minimise damage, lash lift solutions are applied for the least amount of time possible and conditioned with a protein treatment and serum. Kinks are almost unnoticeable and can be smoothed out with recurring treatments spaced 8 weeks apart as the curl takes shape based on the lash’s stage of the life cycle.
Q: Do I need refills?
A: No maintenance is required for lash lifts. Appointments are rescheduled every 8 weeks to maintain a beautiful curl as new natural lashes grow.
Q: Can I have lash extensions on top?
A: Extensions and lash lifts are standalone treatments and don’t need to be used in conjunction. Extensions add length and thickness by adhering an extension to individual lashes. A lash lift curls lashes for a more natural result that is easier to maintain.
Q: What products do you use?
A: Australian brand elleebana is used from start to finish.
Q: What is the process?
A: A lash lift treatment includes consultation, lifting lotions, protein treatment and lash serum. Available add-ons include tint and semi-permanent mascara.

Preparation
Facials leading up to your big day will optimise skin health so that your natural glow shines through. The better your skin, the better the makeup will adhere and last. Makeup adds colour but improving skin texture starts with facials.
Henna brows and a lash lift will shape your brows and lashes in preparation. Brows will be mapped, tidy and the wash of colour speeds up makeup application. Lash lifts remove the need for an eyelash curler so that your lashes open up the eyes more, hold their curl and blend in more beautifully with false lashes.
Avoid drinking too much before bed to reduce puffiness in eyes and straighten hair the night before to minimise frizz and aid in styling the next day. Ensure your hair is thoroughly dry.
Aftercare
No aftercare is required for hair and makeup. Thorough facial cleansing and deep hair conditioning treatments are recommended.
